A corner of my home

I am slowly getting together some photo's of my home in its current state. I would like to have a good record of the changes we make  & also to create a great 'House Tour' here on my blog.
I figured I would start at the front & work my way through.
Its a given that the entire house will get a new coat of paint but those colour decisions will be for a another day.

This is where I start & end my day.In my 'peaceful' room.
I call it this as there is no television in here. so the kids have no interest in hanging out.
This also means it stays tidy.
When your a mother of 4 a permanently  tidy room always brings great joy!!!

Its a beautiful sunny room & a great place for my morning cuppa & equally as inviting to burn a candle & have a glass of wine in the evening.

I love picking fresh flowers from my garden to have in here.
I think this table could do with a piece of coral & a smaller candle.
The photo is one of my absolute favourites  of my two eldest girls when they were very small, it makes me smile every time I see it!

I haven't purchased anything new for this room, except for the clock & tapestry candle, both from my store of course & not specifically for this room, more because I loved them. All of my furniture would you believe has sat in storage for the last 5 years, so it feels kind of new.

I am planning some new cushions to dress the place up & give it a mini make over as these cushions are also 5 years old.

The walls in here are still bare & screaming out for some art work, especially seen as though the hooks from the previous owners are still in the walls, he he he!
It really needs some extra layers to make it feel finished as well. I think I might make a small gallery style wall with some smaller clocks with the large one I already have. The chairs are quite low backed & the ceilings are very high so I need some different height pieces to help the eye flow comfortably around the room.
You need to create a mix of high, medium & low pieces to achieve that flow.

Once I have the cushion situation sorted out, which will determine my accent colour I will then decide what to hang on the walls.I have several ideas but I am struggling to make a decision. At this stage it is very monotone but I would like to soften things by adding another colour in a medium tone/depth, which is what I have tried to do with the warm greys. I would like to replace most of the solid colour cushions with something a little softer & introduce some pattern for a little more interest.
It currently feels & looks incredibly boring.

It is open to the formal dining area so these two spaces will need to work together.
There is only room for smaller art pieces as there are two walls with a window each & the other two walls have door ways.
It was actually very challenging getting the furniture placement right, especially when the chairs are more of a one & a half seater. The room we previously had them in was much larger & they worked well there. It's not in my budget any time in the near future to replace them so I need to make them work.

I would like to update the pendant lights but I really cant decide what I would like, once again it has to work with the dining area.
Perhaps a floor lamp rather than or as well as the current table lamp to help create a step in the heights of my furniture pieces.
I am looking forward to getting a few interesting decor items to create a nicer vignettes on the  side tables.

This current side table isn't staying here I just needed a little something for the space, so used this one that we had, it normally lives in the living area.
Its actually to large for the space, I think something round would be nice here.

My wish list for this space :
Paint
Cushions
Light fitting
Art
 Coffee table
Side table
Floor lamp
Decor items

I will most likely be asking for your advice &/or opinions on these ideas as I go along.
It will all happen at a snails pace, but that's OK, I think a room always looks nicer if it evolves over time rather than  creating it over night.
Now I am off to Pinterest to analyse exactly what it is that I love about my favourite inspiration rooms.

Do you have a peaceful room or even a little nook to have some quiet time?

Adding a touch of Faux FUR to your decor for winter warmth

There is no better way to create a warm, cosy winter feel to a room than by adding a little fur to your decor.

Faux Fur can add a touch of warmth to any decor style

It can be very glamorous

or contemporary

or even formal.

Using texture is a great way to bring interest to a very simple colour palette especially if there is minimal or no use of pattern in the room.Faux Fur is a fantastic way to do that especially in the winter time, as it also creates that feeling of warmth.
You can read more about adding pattern into you decor

I especially love fur along side some bling. This room is a beautiful example of how to mix textures to add interest in a very simple colour palette. You have a faux fur throw, glitter cushion, a linen bedhead & a cute cane basket & it all works perfectly don't you think.

This is my faux fur cushion, the skull cushion is a little something I made for one of my daughters.

So will you add a touch of fur to your decor for the cooler months ?

Custom cushion

Ive been getting kind of busy sewing a few cushions lately.
I made this one for my eldest daughters 19th birthday.

Now I can't take all of the credit for this burst of creativity as I did gain my inspiration from another blogger
Bec has a full tutorial on how she made her fabulous cushion, so if your looking for tips pop on over!!
But here's a few snaps of mine in progress.

I traced the skull outline onto the paper of some fusible interfacing & then ironed it onto my doily

Cut out the shape

I used Panne velvet for my cushion as I couldn't find any regular velvet, it was a bit painful to work with I thought.... but gave a good end result.

I ironed it onto my fabric & then used black embroidery cotton to stitch around all of the raw edges of the doily

I then stitched the two squares of fabric together with my sewing machine, leaving an opening at the bottom to pop the cushion insert in, I then hand stitched it closed. My original plan was to insert a hidden zipper, but my over locker isn't currently working so I was unable to put a decent edge on the fabric. This made it impossible to get the zipper in neatly. Like I said before, this fabric was a pain to work with, it slips, slides, stretches & frays very easily.

TA DA!!!

What do you think of my skull cushion?
Dream child No1 loved it!!!

Progress at last

Progress at last on the dream house front, WOOO HOOO!!!!

We actually sat down with an architect yesterday to get some plans drawn up for the dream house. This will take a couple of weeks for the first draft.
We will go through the process of plans & development application to council & hopefully by this stage we will have one or two properties sold & be able to begin building.
We will be going owner builder so it will all happen slowly but from cost estimates so far it looks like we will save approx 30%  on what the two different builders quoted price.

I thought I would leave you with a little eye candy as well....Dont you just love this gorgeous room...the rug...those cushions...Oh I love it all!!!!

An outdoor dining project

With the dream house taking a little longer to get off the ground than we ever imagined, we have begun to get a little tired of having a lot of our favourite things in storage.
The house we rent is much smaller than we are used to, it was only meant to be temporary, but, here we are two years later & no end in sight.

At our back door we had a nice big slab of concrete & nothing more, exposing the back of the house to the hot afternoon sun as well as the rain, so my ultra clever dream guy whipped up a fabulous alfresco area...

We have a handrail all the way around with a gate to keep our enormous drooling dog out. This is what he does best mind you!

Its been nice to be able to have friends over & sit outside with nibblies & drinks

I stitched up some cushions from some bargain fabric that I purchased on sale at spotlight, originally
$18.99 mtr, I only paid $4.00 mtr, YAY for me !!

My dream guy gave me this fabulous lantern as a birthday present, I burn a citronella candle in it which smells divine & keeps the mosquitos at bay....

Not only did we bring our outdoor setting out of storage, we also managed to find a place for my beloved "arles clock" . I got it at Freedom years ago, before big clocks became super trendy & I don't think I will ever tire of it!!!

Hope you love our new outdoor space, drop by & have a glass of wine with me anytime!!!
